How to Size a Walking Cane

How to Size a Walking Cane

One question we get asked all the time is,

“How do you size a stick?”

To be sure, sizing can be a subjective art form.

What feels right for one person may feel uncomfortable for another.

With that in mind, take these guidelines we've picked up on our journey, and run with them.

We think they'll do you right.

So here you go, a guide on how to size your walking stick:

– For small children and shorter adults, we generally recommend a 41-inch stick.

– For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a 48-inch stick.

– For people who are between 5’4″ and 5’11”, we recommend a 55-inch stick.

– For adults over 5’11”, we recommend a 58-inch stick.

- PRO TIP: For the Fitness Walker - we generally go down a size. (if you're 5'4"-5'11", grab a 48" and so on)

The other question we get, obviously is:

How do you size a Cane?

If you want to generally figure how to size your cane, our standard 37-inch size is a good starting place for most adults. (For taller folks, we offer 40-inch canes as well.)

Cane sizing is best achieved by standing up nice and straight, relaxing your arm naturally to the side, and having someone measure the distance from your wrist to the floor.

For people wanting step-by-step support, or for those with special needs, it’s best to consult your doctor or another medical professional about your exact sizing.

If you find that the cane is still a little bit too long, you can always pop off the rubber ferrule, saw a half inch or so off until it's just right. Pop your ferrule back on, and you'll be right as rain!
